Featuring from Briercrest women’s soccer team is third year BA Biblical Studies student Anita Frei. Anita served as captain of the women’s soccer team in both the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons, as well as a Residence Assistant on her hall in 2018-19.
Anita came to Briercrest for the 2017-18 season, originally planning to only stay for the year, but found a love for the school she did not expect. She comments, “when I first came, I was just going to do a year. Then in my first year, I decided I was going to do an AA in biblical studies, and I was getting ready to graduate and everything but then in the last two months I changed my mind and decided I was coming here for four years!” Frei is excited to be finishing her degree at Briercrest, although the decision to attend and play soccer at Briercrest had been a challenge.
Frei shares that, “it was actually a hard decision to give up some of those other soccer opportunities that I had,” as Briercrest was not her only option. However, she explains, “I really felt like I wanted to be at Briercrest as a school and I felt like this was where God wanted me to be. I'm super glad that I did come and playing on the soccer team here has been really good.” For Frei, “it's been a huge blessing to be able to play and continue to keep a love for the game because I'm surrounded by people who are supportive and loving God and loving the game and loving playing for God's glory.”
For Frei, soccer has opened up opportunities to combine her passion to play with work experience, spending the past summer with the organization Athletes in Action which she was introduced to through Briercrest. “I was able to coach soccer and through that bring God to kids,” she shares, “and I think that was just the coolest experience and one that I had no idea was even out there until I came here.” Frei plans to continue to work with AIA, as she loves the opportunity to make the sport she loves her ministry.
Coming to Briercrest has played an important role in Frei’s life, one of the reasons why she has decided to return. “I was raised in a Christian home, but I was really questioning my faith and the existence of God when I graduated high school,” Frei admits, but was challenged with the verse "but if from there you seek the Lord your God, you will find him if you seek Him with all your heart and with all your soul." (Deuteronomy 4:29). Frei decided to apply this verse to her life, especially as she came to Briercrest, discovering that “when I truly started to seek God with all my heart and actually pour myself into truly seeking him, then He was there.”
Briercrest is proud to have Frei leading the women’s soccer team, and excited to see how the team will do under an honest and committed leader as they head into the Futsal season.
